It came down to the wire, but the Chicago Cubs have signed all 20 players they selected in the 2023 MLB Draft. Jaxon Wiggins, who was taken in the second round with the 68th overall pick, was the final player to agree to his signing bonus with the Cubs ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.
According to MLB.com’s Jim Callis, the Cubs signed Wiggins to $300K more than the slot value of the 68th pick in this year’s draft.
The Cubs officially announced that all 20 players they drafted have been signed.
If the Cubs had not been able to come to terms with Wiggins, then they would have received a compensatory selection in the 2024 draft, getting either the 68th or 69th overall pick.
Although the signing of Wiggins came down to the wire, it wasn’t a huge surprise, as the Cubs had already hinted that it wouldn’t be a sure-thing for the right-handed pitcher to sign. The following quote is from Cubs VP of Scouting, Dan Kantrovitz.
Via Bleacher Nation.
“Jaxon, actually, in his case, some of the stuff he was doing in Arkansas was just literally off the charts when it came to strength and conditioning, and just sort of what kind of a deluxe athlete he is,” Kantrovitz said. “If we’re fortunate enough to [sign him], he’s somebody that we would probably, really just take our time with, obviously, and make sure first and foremost that, health is sort of the driving factor in development, initially.”
Wiggins, 21, pitched at the University of Arkansas during his college career. There was a chance that the right-handed pitcher could have been a first-round pick this year, but unfortunately Wiggins did have Tommy John surgery in February, forcing him to miss the entire 2023 season.
During his freshman season with Arkansas, Wiggins appeared in 17 games, but only started four of them. The right-hander struck out 28 batters in 23 innings, but also walked 14. In 2022, Wiggins made 15 starts and two additional appearances as a reliever. He once again put up strong strikeout numbers, 82 K in 66 innings, but Wiggins also had the same problem giving up free bases, as he walked 43 batters.
