So much for that pitching depth in the starting rotation.
A day after placing Tyler Chatwood on the injured list with an elbow issue, the Cubs added left-hander José Quintana to the 10-day IL too.
Quintana was already penciled in to take Chatwood’s spot in the rotation, but now the Cubs will have to change their plans. Rookie Adbert Alzolay will eventually come up this weekend to face the Cardinals, but for now Jason Adam will take Quintana’s roster spot.
No matter how you look at this, it’s not ideal for the Cubs. Even if Alzolay stays up in the rotation (he should now) the team will have one less quality pitcher available out of the bullpen for at least another week depending on how Quintana recovers.
After this series is done in Pittsburgh, the Cubs will play five games in four days starting Friday against the Cardinals, then three more against the Reds and Brewers before getting a day off on Sept. 14.
Alzolay should start one of the doubleheader games this Saturday against the Cardinals.
