Bob Nightengale wrote about Joe Maddon’s job security in USA Today yesterday, when he reported that according to a few MLB executives the Chicago Cubs could be looking to move on from Maddon if the team has an early exit from the playoffs.
Here’s what Nightengale wrote.
Joe Maddon helped lead the Chicago Cubs to the Holy Grail of sports, with a consistent level of success they haven’t seen in a century, but there are whispers his job could be in jeopardy if they don’t play deep into October.
…
Maddon wants to continue managing, but if the Cubs fail to make the playoffs, or go out quickly, his fate is tenuous, several baseball executives told USA TODAY on the condition of anonymity. The executives did not want to speak publicly about Maddon’s situation.
Hilarious stuff, as Maddon is still under contract through 2019, and is the most successful manager in the team’s history.
Anyway, Maddon was on 670 The Score on Tuesday and was asked about that report.
"That means nothing. That's actually dumb" Joe Maddon on Bob Nightengale's report yesterday lmao

Joe Maddon on USA Today report that his job could be in jeopardy if #Cubs falter late: "Any time I have to worry about what @BNightengale writes or what anybody writes, I have to just hang them up anyway."

Maddon went on and said he knows Nightengale very well and wondered why he’d write that article, suggesting it was for clicks.
Hey, at least it made some fans laugh and gave Maddon a chance to roast Nightengale, which he quickly did.
