If you’ve paid attention to left-handed reliever Brad Wieck during summer camp, then you definitely noticed that his velocity dipped into the 90-91mph range. When he was called up by the Cubs in 2019, he was averaging almost 94mph.
During Saturday’s game Wieck gave up a 2-run home run to Christian Yelich and once again wasn’t throwing any harder than 91mph. And maybe it was because of his hamstring injury that Wieck just wasn’t pumping it in there like last year.
Prior to Sunday’s series finale against the Brewers, Wieck was placed on the injured list with a hamstring strain. Right-handed reliever Ryan Tepera has been called up to take Wieck’s spot in the bullpen.
Tepera didn’t make the Cubs’ Opening Day roster and it was kind of a surprise, but Theo Epstein is expecting big things from the righty.
