The Cubs got better today. Now, it’s up to the players to perform. Here are the final roster moves following the trade deadline.
Right-handed reliever David Phelps is on the 25-man roster after the Cubs made a deal with the Blue Jays for him on Tuesday. Right-hander Duane Underwood Jr. has been sent back to Triple-A Iowa to make room for Phelps.
The Cubs began Wednesday by trading catcher Martin Maldonado to the Astros for utility man Tony Kemp. So, the left-handed hitter will take Maldonado’s spot on the 25-man roster.
The big trade of the day was Nick Castellanos from the Tigers for a couple pitchers. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Cubs DFA’d pitching prospect Oscar De La Cruz.
The Cubs also traded Carl Edwards Jr. plus some international bonus money to the Padres for left-handed reliever Brad Wieck.
So, Kemp and Phelps are in St. Louis and will be available tonight, while Castellanos will join the Cubs Thursday.
