Cubs Linked To New Free Agent Outfielder

-

Who knows if the Cubs can afford him, but they’re once again linked to a low-cost free agent. This time it’s 30-year-old Steven Souza, who missed all of 2019 with the Diamondbacks.

Primarily a right fielder since making his MLB debut in 2014, Souza is drawing interest from the Cubs and a few other teams.

Souza suffered a season-ending knee injury on the final week of spring training last March. He also missed a big chunk of the 2018 season with a pec strain.

The right-handed hitter has never hit for a high average (.233 in his career) and he strikes out a lot (31.2 K%) yet he does walk 10.6% of the time and does have a 30-home run season in 2017. That was by far his best year in the majors. Overall, he’s been a 103 wRC+ hitter in 471 MLB games. Basically an average hitter.

As a bench guy, Souza could be fine for the Cubs. I guess.
