Cubs Get Beaten Out for Star Third Baseman

-

Well, at the end it looked like the Chicago Cubs were one of the few teams left in the mix for star third baseman Eugenio Suarez. However, the Cubs were beaten out as the Seattle Mariners once again agreed to a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, acquiring their second corner infielder in the past week.

Once teammates in Arizona, Suarez will once again reunite with Josh Naylor in Seattle.

The Mariners are reportedly sending the Diamondbacks three prospects, including a pair of pitchers.

Bob Nightengale reports that the trade package includes Tyler Locklear, currently ranked No. 9 in Seattle’s system on MLB Pipeline.

And here’s the complete deal.

(Previous Update)

Well, we’re still waiting for the Chicago Cubs to make a move at the trade deadline, but the buzz has certainly arrived. Rumors are flying left and right, surprise players are now available, and teams are trying to navigate through the circus online just like fans. Here are the latest Cubs trade deadline updates on Wednesday.

Primary teams for Suarez include Cubs

Eugenio Suarez returned to the Arizona Diamondbacks starting lineup on Wednesday in their series finale against the Detroit Tigers. The slugging third baseman underwent exams on his hand after he was hit by a pitch Monday night, which sidelined him the following day. Suarez, who will be a free agent after the 2025 season, has been a target for the Cubs this summer and according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Cubs are one of the primary teams interested in trading for the slugging third baseman.

Earlier this week ESPN’s Jeff Passan named the Cubs and Seattle Mariners as the two most realistic landing spots for Suarez at the trade deadline. However, the asking price has to come down because a report out of Seattle said that Arizona is asking for multiple top-100 prospects for Suarez.

Entering Wednesday, Suarez had 36 home runs in 105 games. His 143 wRC+ is currently the second-best mark among third basemen in MLB, trailing only Manny Machado of the San Diego Padres. Other teams linked to Suarez this month include NL Central rivals Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds.

However, you can take Reds out of the mix as they made a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates for third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes.
