Cubs Close To Retiring Another Number

-

No, it’s not Sammy Sosa even though the #21 should be retired for the Cubs.

Anyway, 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine reported a few days ago that the Cubs are close to retiring #46 for Hall of Fame closer Lee Smith.

The Cubs currently have five numbers retired (for six players) along with the #42, which is retired by the entire league for Jackie Robinson.

The six players who have their numbers retired by the Cubs are all members of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Ron Santo – #10
Ernie Banks – #14
Ryne Sandberg – #23
Billy Williams – #26
Fergie Jenkins and Greg Maddux – #31

And soon it’ll be #46 for Lee Smith.

Smith was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame, by receiving all 16 votes back in December 2018, from the Today’s Game Committee.

Smith began his MLB career, pitching eight seasons for the Cubs from 1980-87. The reliever also pitched for the Red Sox, Cardinals, Yankees, Orioles, Angels, Reds and Expos, retiring after the 1997 season as MLB’s all-time saves leader.
