Chicago Cubs In the History Books…For Being Losers

-

To be fair, the only reason the Chicago Cubs now hold this stupid record is that they won 15 straight home games, but unfortunately, they suck now and have lost eight consecutive games at Wrigley Field. The offense showed a little life as Seiya Suzuki and Pete Crow-Armstrong both homered, Colin Rea was solid, but then Caleb Thielbar blew the game in the eighth inning, allowing two runs to erase a 4-2 Cubs lead. The Athletics scored a run in the 10th, and guess who just could not come up with a hit with runners in scoring position in the bottom half?

The Cubs lost 5-4, dropping them to 5-18 since their second 10-game winning streak was snapped against the Texas Rangers. The team has now gone four weeks without winning a single series as the only positive was splitting a four-game series last week against the Pittsburgh Pirates after losing the first two games.

The home losing streak dates back to the Milwaukee Brewers matchup, when the Cubs were outclassed in a three-game sweep, followed by another sweep against the Houston Astros. That’s when things really went from a bad stretch to maybe they just suck.

Even when the offense has stepped up during this horrific 23-game stretch, the pitching has been crushed, and on Wednesday night, the bullpen couldn’t protect a two-run lead in the eighth. But the Cubs did have a shot to tie the game in the 10th, when Kevin Alcántara tagged up to third base on a fly ball hit by Nico Hoerner. Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman failed to come through, stranding the rookie at third.

The Cubs were 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position in the one-run loss, a theme that has stuck around all year long for this team.

It is truly insane how bad the Cubs have been during the past four weeks. They literally went from the best record in MLB to 5-18. The team has two guys hitting with any consistency since mid-April, and well, Ian Happ is getting hot again now, too. The rotation is going to get healthier with Edward Cabrera and Matthew Boyd returning in the next week, but the veterans in the lineup have to hit, and they just haven’t.

What started as a magical season has turned into an ugly mess for the Cubs.
