Addison Russell returned to the Cubs a few days ago and was put in the starting lineup Wednesday night at Wrigley Field. Theo Epstein expected fans to voice their displeasure when Russell came to the plate and he was right, as most fans booed.

Melisa Reidy, Addison Russell’s ex-wife, wrote about the abuse she suffered when she was married with the Cubs infielder. MLB investigated the allegations and suspended Russell 40 games.

Epstein has said on a few occasions that when first discussing what the team would do with Russell a lot of people who he trusts and respects advised for the Cubs to just let him go. However, the team decided to stick with Russell and guide him through the process of recognizing his wrongs, being accountable and become a better person.

Yes, there are fans that no matter what Russell says or does, will never like him again, or accept that he’s changed. And no one but Russell is actually going to know what’s going through his head, but so far there’s been no indication that Russell even thinks he did anything wrong.

After playing in Tuesday’s game, Russell provided this tone-deaf comment about the fans booing him.

Hopefully Addison Russell is doing everything possible to be a better person and will rid himself of truly awful behavior. At the end it doesn’t really matter what he says, but it doesn’t really appear as though he gets it.

Somehow, Russell is turning himself into the victim.
