We’ve Learned Details Of Minnesota’s Possible Offer For Josh Giddey And It’s Enticing

-

In the past couple of days, it was reported that the Minnesota Timberwolves are on the hunt for point guard help. While their primary goal is to retain Ayo Dosunmu, it’s not guaranteed as he prepares to test free agency. While Minnesota does have some breathing room under the second apron, it isn’t enough to go crazy. Besides, the free agent point guard market this year is rough, which is probably why Dosunmu is willing to see what’s out there. It also explains why the Timberwolves are interested in Josh Giddey.

Word leaked a few days ago that the Chicago Bulls‘ point guard has been a hot topic inside their building. They feel he could be available at the right price. There has been no clear indication of this from Chicago’s side, but it’s at least clear that VP of Basketball Operations Bryson Graham is willing to listen. What wasn’t known to this point is the type of offer Minnesota might consider. That has finally changed. According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, it would likely involve their 1st round pick this year, coupled with two contracts they wish to dump.

The Timberwolves have gauged the trade value of Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and their No. 28 first-round pick in the draft, league sources told HoopsHype.

Randle appeared in 79 games last season, averaging 21.1 points on 48.1 percent shooting with 6.7 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He’s owed $33.33 million this upcoming season and has a $35.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season. DiVincenzo suffered a ruptured right Achilles tendon in the playoffs and is on an expiring $12.54 million contract for the upcoming season.

According to Darren Wolfson, Minnesota recently expressed interest in Josh Giddey, which was confirmed by HoopsHype.

This Josh Giddey trade idea certainly has appeal.

First and foremost, it would give the Bulls a third pick in the 1st round of what many consider a strong draft. We’ve already seen what having such a cluster of wealth can do for a team’s fortunes. Oklahoma City had three 1st round picks in 2022. Two of them landed Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams, cornerstones of their eventual championship team in 2025. The third pick, Ousmane Dieng, was traded to Charlotte for Mason Plumlee, who was then waived to make room for Jared McCain, who was excellent for the Thunder in the playoffs coming off the bench.

This comes down to whether the Bulls see Josh Giddey as a potential building block moving forward. He’s still only 23 years old and showed marked improvement in his game last season. While he may not have the defensive prowess Graham prefers, there is no question that he can run any offense required. His contract is more than manageable. Chicago doesn’t have to trade him. It comes down to whether they think he can be a key piece on a championship team.

If not? This offer might be hard to turn down.

Three 1st round picks are a great way to kickstart a rebuild. One of them could be used to find help at point guard. Both contracts from Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo will be off the books within two years. That will allow Chicago to be big spenders once their young core has had some time to grow. Another factor in this is a possible market forming for Josh Giddey. Minnesota might not be the only team interested. It was reported that Phoenix is another team hunting for point guard help, and Giddey is on their list.

The more teams get involved, the higher the price goes. It is entirely possible that Graham is working the phones to see if he gets an offer he can’t refuse. Minnesota’s has appeal. A 1st round pick for a player you may not see as part of your plan is the preferred goal. The good news is Chicago isn’t operating on any sort of deadline. They can draw this out as long as they want, forcing other teams to come to them. All it takes is one to get desperate and make that can’t-say-no offer.
