Cameron Carr? Why Bulls Fans Will Like This Latest Draft Buzz From Chicago Insider

-

By now, there isn’t much drama surrounding what the Chicago Bulls will do with their 4th overall pick. Almost everybody in and around the league believes it will be North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson hearing his name called. The bigger questions surround the 15th overall pick. Lots of rumors have persisted about the Bulls looking to move up, maybe for Keaton Wagler or Aday Mara. Yet most believe they will stay put and pick the best player on their board. As to who that will be, there hasn’t been much certainty. Enter Cameron Carr.

Bulls insider Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times provided his prediction right before the draft. He listed the Baylor guards as the player VP Bryson Graham ultimately goes with once Chicago is on the clock.

Cameron Carr, G, Baylor

“He’s a strong SLAP guy — size, length, athleticism, physicality — according to the scouting philosophy of Bryson Graham, the Bulls’ new executive vice president of basketball operations. He’s also one of the few true wing players with two-way potential in this class. The Bulls could go for more size with Quaintance or Houston’s Chris Cenac Jr., but Carr has been an intriguing target since a stellar showing at the combine.”

There have been whispers that the Bulls would like to get out of this draft with a wing and a guard. So this does make sense. Carr was a no-name through his first two college seasons in Tennessee. So he transferred to Baylor where he became a starter. In 34 games, he averaged 19 points, six rebounds, and three assists for the season while also shooting a respectable 37.4% from downtown.

He was also great in their two College Basketball Crown tournament games, collecting 29 points, 21 rebounds, and four blocks.

Cameron Carr fits Chicago perfectly.

History says this franchise always does well with long, athletic guards. It was true with Michael Jordan, Jimmy Butler, and Jerry Sloan. There is no doubt that Carr’s explosive and aggressive style of play would fit this city like a glove. He plays above the rim and isn’t afraid to mix it up defensively. His shooting is also dependable, both from long and mid-range. The primary issue most have with him is his ballhandling skills. For all of his raw talent, Carr isn’t known for the ability to create by himself.

This is why he’s drawn many comparisons to San Antonio Spurs standout Devin Vassell. While not the focal point of the team, he provides invaluable spacing, strong defense, and quality shooting. The Bulls have needed more players like this for a long time. Carr would be a terrific complement to Josh Giddey as a catch-and-shooter while enhancing Chicago’s perimeter defense against the East’s top guards. He would fill the Matisee Thybulle role in Tiago Splitter’s new system with a chance to expand it over time.

The Bulls will be watching one key spot on draft night.

Based on current projections, the team favored to grab Cameron Carr in the 1st round is the Golden State Warriors at the 11th pick. It’s felt his style of play fits really well with Steph Curry. Miami at #13 is another spot. Pat Riley loves players like Carr. However, it is possible that Pick might be going to Milwaukee if the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumors are true. Should Carr get past those two spots, the odds are highly favorable that he is there when the Bulls go on the clock.

If it ends up being him and Wilson as the two guys, Chicago should be excited. The team will have added two excellent athletic defenders with loads of growth potential on the offensive side, as both shooters and rim-attackers. If they can somehow find a quality presence in the middle, the Bulls could end up surprising some people. Either way, it will be a strong first step towards getting things back on track.
