Will the Chicago Bears Consider the Best Free Agent QB Available?

-

Mitch Trubisky suffered a nasty-looking injury in the game against Minnesota on Sunday. It’s apparent he is dealing with a left shoulder injury, and a serious one at that. Former NFL doctor David J. Chao believes he is likely destined for surgery to repair it. The only good news for the Chicago Bears at this point is that the injury is to his non-throwing shoulder. This means he could return at some point in the future.

Even so, the Bears are in a difficult spot. Chase Daniel will likely be the starter, but is he the guy who can keep their Super Bowl hopes alive? Plenty of people will have their doubts. He’s been a backup his entire career for a reason. This likely isn’t a Nick Foles situation. If Trubisky is out for a long time, the Bears have to at least consider potential outside options. Inevitably, this will bring the conversation around to one name.

Colin Kaepernick.

The former San Francisco 49ers starter has been a free agent since 2017 and professes he remains ready for an opportunity. Thus far teams have begged off, most likely due to the inevitable controversy that would follow from his much-covered kneeling incident during the national anthem. At the same time, his talent is undeniable and he has the skill set that would fit well in the Bears’ offense. It becomes a matter of whether they’d consider the risk.

Chicago Bears likely won’t want media attention with Kaep

The bottom line here is remembering the culture involved. The Bears under GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy prefer to avoid any sort of controversy at all costs. Like it or not, Kaepernick is a walking controversy no matter where he goes. The moment he signed a deal with Chicago, the cameras would gravity to Chicago like a plague of locusts. Not exactly something this team will want to deal with when they’re fighting in one of the toughest divisions in football.

Besides, there is also the fact that Kaepernick would be coming in ice-cold. He’ll have zero knowledge of the offense he’s trying to play and there will be a limit to how well he can execute it. It would take at least a month to reach even half speed. While the talent is obvious, it just feels like Kaepernick would be little more than a hail mary attempt by a desperate team. Chicago isn’t at that stage yet. They’re hurting, but there isn’t a reason to panic.
