One of the key traits the Chicago Bears look for in their players under GM Ryan Poles is guys who love football. They must have a genuine passion for the game. They don’t want players who view the NFL as a means to make money. There is nothing wrong with wanting to do so, but they believe that it is the ones who truly love the game that end up reaching their full potential. They saw those characteristics in cornerback Tyrique Stevenson when they traded up for him in the 2nd round this past April.
The Miami product’s passion is hard to miss. He plays with relentless intensity that can stray close to reckless at times. It serves him well in his ability to defend the run and as a physical presence in coverage. For the past several weeks, he has worked hard to improve his game. The Bears defense has rounded into form over that time, becoming one of the NFL’s toughest. As Chicago was putting a beating on the division-leading Detroit Lions on Sunday, Stevenson was spotted on the sideline talking to teammate Kyler Gordon.
It was at this moment the realization hit him. He’s in the NFL and he plays for the Chicago Bears.
Tyrique Stevenson has so much potential.
Remember, he’s a rookie. The Bears threw him into the fire immediately. That can be rough, especially for cornerbacks. It wasn’t great early as veteran receivers gave him an education on the type of speed and precision he’ll be facing at this level. To his credit, Stevenson didn’t flinch. He kept battling and has put together some strong games of late. His settling in has been a big reason the defense has become tougher against the pass, forcing QBs to try Jaylon Johnson on the other side.

The crazy part is of the five starters in the Bears’ secondary, only one is over the age of 24. This is a young group that likely hasn’t even peaked yet. Tyrique Stevenson is only getting started. As he gains experience, he will become that much tougher to deal with. His appreciation of the opportunity should make his story even more exciting to follow. Chicago will need him on Sunday against a talented Cleveland Browns receiving corps.
