Contrary to popular myth, whenever head coaches are fired in the NFL, their entire staff doesn’t always go with them. Smart organizations tend to evaluate assistants individually to see if they’re worth keeping around. That is how the Chicago Bears ended up keeping Buddy Ryan and Vic Fangio as defensive coordinators despite the head coaches who brought them in getting canned. Not much has been great about the 2023 season for this team. However, it’s time to acknowledge how well the offensive line has played.
The Bears offense ranks 5th in rushing this season. That comes despite losing two of their three primary running backs to injuries, as well as their quarterback. Pass protection has also improved. They’re allowing a pressure rate of 23.8% this year, down from 25.4% last year. It is a big step in the right direction. All of this has been accomplished despite four of their five starters missing games with injuries. Credit for this success must go to offensive line coach Chris Morgan. He was handed a rough situation in 2022 and swiftly molded the Bears into a respectable blocking unit.
The Chicago Bears found somebody they can trust in Morgan.
His reputation is one of no-nonsense and hard work. He demands a lot from his players. They need to be well-conditioned and ready to work at all times. His presence was one of the big reasons Darnell Wright wanted to play in Chicago. The 10th overall pick recognized right away what Morgan could do for him. Now, the rookie looks like he will be a starter for a long time in the NFL. They talk about continuity being vital to success in the NFL. That is especially true up front. If the Bears are smart, they will work to retain Morgan even if they fire Matt Eberflus after this season.
This approach has worked wonders for the Philadelphia Eagles. Jeff Stoutland has been there since 2013, surviving not one but two head coach firings along the way. They are smart enough to realize you don’t let quality assets walk. Morgan has been among the few bright spots on an otherwise disappointing staff. The Chicago Bears should make sure to recognize that when changes come. He’s already shown he can develop younger players. There is no sense in letting that walk away.
