The Chicago Bears’ defensive line has plenty of veterans present. It starts with Montez Sweat, their Pro Bowl defensive end, whom they traded for two years ago. Next is Andrew Billings, the tough and dependable nose tackle. Grady Jarrett, a two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle coming off a decade-long run with the Atlanta Falcons, also joins the group. Nobody would be shocked if any of those names emerged as the leader of the defensive line room. They all have the experience and productivity to justify it.
However, based on recent comments this past week, none of them are the names to watch. Jarrett admitted that nobody took a greater step toward becoming that guy than Gervon Dexter. The third-year defensive tackle organized workouts for the entire group down in Miami, something Jarrett immediately appreciated.
“I thought that was a big gesture for him to invite me … to hang out with them, spend some time working on some craft, and I was able to meet him and (Montez Sweat) before I came in the building,” Jarrett said. “I think that’s been good for our relationship, even before we got in the building. That just shows his willingness to try to take that next step.”
Somehow, people forget how good Dexter was last year. He finished with five sacks and 19 quarterback hits. People act like he’s been a disappointment when, in reality, he’s developing into a really good player.
The Chicago Bears have no reason to discard Dexter.
Yes, he was drafted to play under a different coaching staff, but that doesn’t mean he can’t function under a new one. In truth, defensive coordinator Dennis Allen would love a player like him. The coach has a tendency to prefer bigger defensive linemen with length and power. Dexter has both. Don’t be distracted by the Chicago Bears’ decisions to sign Jarrett and draft Shemar Turner. They aren’t there to save the defensive line; they only need to enhance it. Dexter is ascending into one of the best players on the team. He could take another big step forward this season. It is clear he is embracing all the responsibilities of being a professional. This is what Bears fans have waited for. Maybe it’s time to give the man some credit.
