Chicago Bears fans are willing to grasp at anything by now. They’ve been so starved of good quarterback play that they’re willing to try anything at this point. That includes bypassing a returning Mitch Trubisky in favor of third-string backup Tyler Bray. Yes, really. That much was proved when NBC Sports Chicago delivered a poll following the team’s 24-21 loss to the Oakland Raiders. A game in which backup Chase Daniel threw a crushing interception despite being in Raiders territory with a chance to tie it.
It was simply a reminder of why Daniel hasn’t cracked a starting job for 10 years. Yet fans don’t see that anxious to see Trubisky return either. Granted, his start to 2019 wasn’t great either but it looked like he was starting to come around before he was injured against Minnesota. Are people really so desperate as to put a 3-2 record in the hands of a guy who has never started a game in his NFL career? Based on the results well over 70,000 people are ready to take that plunge.
Chicago Bears fans need to calm down right now
Look, Bray isn’t a terrible player. He’s had some good showings in the preseason. Let’s be real though. If this guy couldn’t beat out Daniel for a higher spot on the depth chart, why would anyone think he can guide this offense out of its current slump. Especially with teams like the Saints, Chargers, and Eagles coming up next. This is clearly an emotional reaction to a frustrating outcome to a game the Bears know they should’ve won. This can lead to knee-jerk reactions.
Was Daniel good? No. That’s why he’s the backup. Trubisky is still their guy and that cannot and should not change. The Bears have to ride this thing out with him. He still gives them the best chance to win on Sundays in spite of his inconsistencies. Bray is what he is. A third-string backup who can be called upon in an emergency. It makes no logical sense to suddenly turn the fate of a football team over to him.
