One Moment About The Draft Still Burns Dazz Newsome Even Now

Dazz Newsome wasn’t happy going in the 6th round of the draft. No self-respecting competitor ever would be. Tom Brady wasn’t. Antonio Brown wasn’t. Terrell Davis wasn’t. All of those men used that as pure motivation to help springboard their careers to outstanding success. Newsome undoubtedly plans to do the same. However, there was something about his selection that burns him even more.

Going in the 6th round was bad enough. That was three rounds after his teammate Dyami Brown. He was the 30th receiver off the board. Yet the moment where the chip on his shoulder grew to monumental proportions took place in the 5th round. That is when the Cincinnati Bengals took Evan McPherson out of Florida with the 149th pick. McPherson is a kicker. Newsome told Parking & Spiegel of 670 The Score that he couldn’t stand something like that happened.

Kickers are people too but they don’t make the same impact receivers do.

They don’t put in nearly the same amount of work or take any of the hits. McPherson had a solid college career, connecting on 51-of-60 field goals across three years. Yet all he did was kick a ball. Teams find guys who can do that in undrafted free agency every single year. For somebody who works as hard as Newsome does, it’s a hard pill to swallow. Knowing at least one NFL team valued a kicker more than him.

GM Ryan Pace said after the draft they were surprised they got him so late. His ability and film suggest he should’ve been long gone already. Yet for whatever reason, he fell. Now he has a chance to compete for the slot receiver job and map out his plans for revenge against the rest of the league.

Dazz Newsome is already making a solid early impression

While there were several receivers present at rookie minicamps last week, the one who always seemed to keep showing up on the field was #83. That was Newsome. His mixture of quickness and strong hands were hard to ignore. The young man just made it look so smooth at times. So routine. That is how the good receivers in the NFL are supposed to make it look.

It is a big reason the Bears were drawn to him. That and his understated ability as a punt returner. Dazz Newsome isn’t just good when making the catch. He’s just as good after it. Don’t be fooled by his 5’10 stature. He’s a strong kid and difficult to bring down. Versatility will be the biggest reason Dazz Newsome sees the field sooner than later. It comes down to whether he can outperform others like Anthony Miller, Marquise Goodwin, and Damiere Byrd in the next three months.

Smart money says not to bet against him.

Organized Team Activities start on June 1st. Then mandatory minicamps will follow on June 15th. After that, they’ll break for a month and a half with training camp beginning at the end of July. That is when Newsome will see his first real taste of the NFL level going against the Bears defense in pads. No doubt the return of the preseason on August 14th will be an exciting time for fans.
