One Chicago Bears Name Now On Hot Seat After Opening Day Fiasco

-

As is too often the case, the Green Bay Packers handled their business against the Chicago Bears. The most disheartening thing about the latest loss is how feeble the offense looked. Despite all of the talent acquisitions the team made in the off-season, the Packers defense still smothered them all day long. Much of the blame falls at the feet of offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. His unit had zero rhythm the entire afternoon, and much of it was because of his odd playcalling. Not only did his run game not work, but he outright refused to get Justin Fields on the move or take shots down the field.

His most baffling decision was to keep calling various screens to the running backs and wide receivers. Green Bay was ready for all of them. The conservative approach was maddening and impossible to defend. That doesn’t even include the series of bad penalties that constantly kept them behind the sticks. He also maintained his bad tendency to call first down runs even when the Bears were down three scores. Nothing about the game made sense, and that is something head coach Matt Eberflus needs to think about going forward.

The Chicago Bears have 16 games to get some answers.

A big problem they’ve had during the Packers rivalry is a tendency to get outcoached. Finding offensive coordinators that can’t coordinate is a time-honored tradition for this team. Getsy did well making adjustments midway through last season. It appears whatever mojo he had is long gone. Fields didn’t look much better, and the Bears did little to get the ball in the hands of their best receiver, D.J. Moore. That is inexcusable. Fields continues to have issues with handling pressure, but the coaching didn’t find him many advantages.

The truth is the Chicago Bears have 16 games left. A lot can happen in that time. Young guys will gain some experience and hopefully show improvement. Fields will get a chance to find a groove with his receivers. Yet the most pressure might be on Getsy. He can’t use the excuse of lacking talent anymore. Ryan Poles added multiple high-end players to the roster this off-season. It should not look as bad as they did on Sunday. Losing, in general, is bad. Losing to the Packers is what gets guys fired.

Getsy has to figure some things out.
