NFL Exec Deals Another Blow To Dying Carson Wentz Bears Buzz

The entire saga surrounding Carson Wentz and the Chicago Bears has grown exhausting. Fans just want a resolution at this point. One way or the other. Yet none appears forthcoming. The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly haven’t received any offers to their liking and have decided to sit on Wentz for the time being in hopes a market develops closer to the start of the league year.

This would explain the rumors of the Bears growing impatient with the process. Yet others insist the team isn’t nearly as interested in Wentz as the media is making it seem. Either way, it’s apparent there is at least some interest in the 28-year old quarterback. However, not enough for GM Ryan Pace to make a determined push. Why is that? Eagles insider Les Bowen spoke to an NFL executive about it and he made one thing clear.

No deal to Chicago is happening if the QB isn’t on board.

It’s been made clear by multiple people that Wentz wants to go to Indianapolis. He wants to reunite with Frank Reich, with whom he had a great relationship in 2016 and 2017. So one can imagine he would sour on the idea of that reunion being taken away by a trade to Chicago. Would he internally resist such an idea? If so, then the Bears are making it clear they have no intention of dealing for him if the guy isn’t 100% all-in.

It gets worse too. There is a growing belief the Eagles are prepared to drag this out as long as it takes in order to get what they want. Matt Lombardo of FanSided spoke to a number of high-level NFL execs about the situation. There is a sense GM Howie Roseman doesn’t fear hanging on to Carson Wentz even past free agency and the draft if necessary.

Some league sources believe this saga could play out well past the NFL Draft when teams who miss out on their top quarterback target might eye Wentz as a fallback option in late spring, and the Eagles might stand a better chance to have their asking price met at that time than they do today.

“If I’m Howie Roseman, if they won’t want to give me what I want, if they’re low-balling me, we’ll pay [Wentz’s] bonus,” the executive says. “We’ll keep him for now. Then, we’ll get that money back some way or somehow.

“But, someone is going to want Wentz. If this drags past free agency, past the draft, some team is going to look around and say ‘Oh Shit, everybody in our division got better but us, and we need a quarterback … give them whatever draft picks they want.’”

Bears have little reason to wait for Carson Wentz

Sure he was a pretty good quarterback in 2019 and flashed greatness in 2017. That isn’t the player they’d be trading for. Wentz threw 16 TDs and 15 interceptions in 2020. His mechanics looked broken and he simply refused to make some decisions that should be easy for quarterbacks. Then there are the reports of his falling out with head coach Doug Pederson. The injury history and the bloated contract.

Philadelphia can feel they have a strong commodity if they wish. The Bears are wise to keep themselves under control. Yes, they need a quarterback. That doesn’t mean they should saddle the organization with such an obvious albatross who may not be able to fly anymore. Carson Wentz was good once. There is no guarantee he’ll be good again.

Overpaying for a chance to find out is bad business.

Granted, this is Ryan Pace we’re talking about. The Bears GM has a concerning history when it comes to bidding against himself for quarterbacks. Trading three extra picks to get Trubisky is the shining example. Everybody knows he liked Wentz back in 2016. It isn’t hard for disillusioned fans to believe wholeheartedly he’d jump into this with both feet. Thankfully that hasn’t happened.

Yet.
