Tyson Bagent is one of the hottest stories in the NFL right now. That isn’t a surprise. It’s not every day you see a kid come from Division II college as an undrafted free agent, start a game, and win it convincingly. For somebody who was supposed to be in awe of the talent at this level, Bagent didn’t look intimidated. He was calm, poised, and made good decisions with the ball. He compiled just shy of 200 total yards with a touchdown. For a rookie in his first start, that is good stuff. One person thrilled about it is Mike Tirico.
The longtime NFL announcer now leads the team for Sunday Night Football. Thanks to the thumb injury to Justin Fields, he now has the chance to see Bagent start against the Los Angeles Chargers this weekend. It’s a great story. Everybody wants to see him succeed. People love underdogs. However, Tirico was also quick to point out something important during an interview with Football Night In Chicago. Bagent’s performance against the Raiders also showcased something else.
The Bears actually have a stronger roster than people say, putting a positive light on GM Ryan Poles.
Tyson Bagent helped the Bears’ roster shine.
Everybody knew they had to step up on Sunday to get the win. The heroes of the game were the offensive line. They bullied Las Vegas all afternoon, paving the way for 173 yards on the ground. D’Onta Foreman, their third-string running back, scored three touchdowns. D.J. Moore, Darnell Mooney, and Tyler Scott all made some really nice plays through the air to keep the chains moving. Then it was the defense that did the rest, smothering the Raiders for only 12 points and forcing two huge turnovers in the 4th quarter to put the game away.

You can always tell how good or bad a roster is when they’re saddled with a quarterback who is limited. Las Vegas wasn’t a cupcake opponent. They were coming off two straight wins. Their defense was 8th in the league against the pass. While not a great team, they aren’t terrible either. The Bears crushed them. This is a sign Poles might know what he’s doing. He is building something capable of winning games down the line. It may require one more off-season to get there. Tyson Bagent could be a big part of it.
