Luke Getsy Had Perfect Answer For Why He Took Senior Bowl Job

-

Luke Getsy has proven one thing about himself through his first year with the Chicago Bears. He’s a pragmatist. His job as a coach is to do what is best for his football team. He proved that throughout the 2022 season, radically changing his system to fit the talent of his players better. As a result, Justin Fields set records as a runner, and the Bears had their best-ever rushing attack. The objective moving forward is to see how he and his staff can build on that for 2023.

That was why it was interesting when he earned the opportunity to become the head coach of the American team at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. Some saw it as him taking a chance to show other teams he is head coaching material. There is nothing wrong with that. However, that isn’t his primary goal. Getsy didn’t dance around the subject when asked. He isn’t doing this out of the kindness of his heart. His mission is to work with these young players and see if any of them are potential future starters for the Bears.

Luke Getsy recognizes the opportunity in front of him.

He’s not dumb. The Senior Bowl is arguably the most fertile ground for draft evaluation outside of the scouting combine. It routinely produces several future NFL starters every year. Getsy should know. He watched the Green Bay Packers take advantage of it for years with guys like Jamaal Williams, Darnell Savage, and Elgton Jenkins. The Bears did pretty well with it this past year with guys like Velus Jones and Braxton Jones. Now they have an even bigger opportunity thanks to this unexpected inside information.

Luke Getsy can get even more personal with these players since he’s running both practices and meetings. He’ll figure out which guys work the hardest and love football the most. Those are usually the ones that separate themselves from others in the NFL. John Fox failed to seize this opportunity back in 2017. Getsy has no intention of making the same mistake. Any information he can gather will be relayed to GM Ryan Poles and his staff. If things go as hoped, the Bears should come out of this draft with some good players.

Russell, listening to you was like a dream after all the foolishness lately from the nuckleheads. So great to hear from a fan as excited as I am.
You may be right about the play calling at the end. So many things didn’t add up and I thought like you did but figured I was stretching things a bit but now to see you feel the same way…..
God Bless you and GO BEARS!!!!!¡

I can see the value and advantages for sure. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in the draft and subsequently, during the 23 season. I’m cautiously optimistic.

I hope Getsy doesn’t get a head coaching offer from one of the NFL teams because the Bears need him back to help develop their offense and we don’t want to start over with a new offense coordinator.

I always poo poo’d games like this… I was ignorant to the plathera of info that can be gathered. I’m glad I know better now. that being said the measurables from the combine doesn’t show a players drive, determination and willingness to ‘accept coaching’. This is INVALUEABLE info and I’m glad our team is smart enough to realize it and seize the opportunity. the needle is pointed UP for the bears…. WAY UP! p.s. yes, our RECORD was the worst but we were NOT the worst team in the NFL. p.s.s. I think getsy did a ‘rope a dope’ with… Read more »
