The narrative on Mitch Trubisky reads like a novel. The main character leaves home so bright and full of hope. He encounters early successes but then runs into adversity. After a time things start to look bleak until they reach what is called a “black moment.” Essentially their rock bottom of the story. For Trubisky that was his benching in September. Then the character picks themselves up and finds triumph in the end. If anybody knows this story well, it’s Kurt Warner.

He had to fight hard to even get into the NFL as an undrafted free agent back in the 1990s. He had those early successes including a Super Bowl and league MVP. Then he lost his job and spent four years mostly backing up high draft picks. All of a sudden in 2007, he got another chance in Arizona and he rode it all the way to the greatest career comeback in NFL history. So if anybody can understand what Trubisky is going through, it’s him.

One would think he’d be happy for the 26-year old.

Warner though understands the need to separate personal feelings and business. That is what the Chicago Bears will have to do sometime in the next month or so. Trubisky has played well for the past few weeks, throwing 10 TD passes to just four INTs. He looks like a new man. Enough to where some around the league think they should do what they can to secure him on an extension.

Amazing to hear such things given those same people thought he was trash barely a couple of months ago. One person who isn’t buying into the hype is Warner. He was asked about what the Bears should do with Trubisky moving forward. The Hall of Fame quarterback was rather blunt. Everything the young QB has done up to this point isn’t enough to justify any sort of payday.

Kurt Warner is right. Trubisky isn’t anything new

While he is definitely playing better than he was earlier in the year and most of 2019, it’s nothing above what people have already seen from him. The closest resemblance is where he was at in 2018. While that wasn’t a bad QB it certainly wasn’t one who deserves $20+ million per year on a new contract. There are plenty of warning signs to indicate Trubisky is still Trubisky.

Three turnovers against the Packers. A strip-sack fumble to lose the game vs. Detroit. End zone interceptions in back to back weeks against Minnesota and Jacksonville. Good quarterbacks don’t have such brutal moments on a consistent basis as Trubisky does. Kurt Warner knows this. As badly as Bears fans may want him to succeed, it’s Year 4. Reality must sink in. The guy is an average QB.

They need to think about finding a way to move on.

Now if they can keep Trubisky at a cheaper price? Entertaining the idea isn’t bad. Chicago won’t have a high 1st round pick and any trade they consider will be expensive. Keeping him as a sort of bridge option at an affordable dollar amount isn’t a bad plan. Still, they have to get serious about resuming their search for a true franchise guy.
