Kevin Warren Surfaced At Bears-Chargers (And His Reactions Said A Lot)

-

The Chicago Bears once again embarrassed themselves on national television, getting run out of SoFi Stadium by the Los Angeles Chargers. Tyson Bagent didn’t have enough magic, and the rest of the team did nothing to help him. The defense let Justin Herbert do whatever he wanted. Offensively, they were maligned by constant penalties. Running the ball was a challenge. Yet it was the coaching that stood out the most. Matt Eberflus and his staff once again didn’t seem to have answers. Brandon Staley was a step ahead of them all night. That probably didn’t please Kevin Warren too much.

The Bears’ team president appeared on camera for the first time this season. He watched the game with a roster sheet in hand. Needless to say, he didn’t look happy. It’s well-documented that Warren has a certain standard when it comes to winning. That is a big reason he took the job. He knew it would be a challenge. With the Bears falling to 2-6, they’re on pace for their worst two-year run in franchise history. Eberflus has five wins as a coach. Five. It isn’t yet clear how much power Warren has in the organization, but that doesn’t look like a man content to keep the status quo going into 2024.

Kevin Warren has some big decisions ahead of him.

They center around what to do with the team’s current power structure. Five wins in 25 games is unacceptable, regardless if you reset the roster or not. Eberflus hasn’t done much of anything to justify a third season. His defense is terrible. The team is undisciplined and he’s done little to further the development of Justin Fields. What does he offer this team? Nothing. That is the answer. If Warren has any common sense, he’ll push for a change at head coach. Poles is a somewhat tougher evaluation.

There have been flashes this season that Chicago has some talent on the roster. It is difficult to know how much of it is masked by poor coaching. Darnell Wright looks like a really good player. Other young draft picks have shown promise as well. Kevin Warren can either give Poles another chance to find the right coach, or he can wipe the slate clean and bring in his own people. Don’t forget Warren had no say in the hiring of Poles or Eberflus. There are nine games left. The evaluation will continue. Unless something drastic changes in that time, change could be coming.
