Justin Fields Gave His O-Line A Pretty Awesome Christmas Present

-

Justin Fields has been sacked 48 times this season. He has every right to be annoyed with his offensive line over their inability to protect him. That isn’t how the Chicago Bears quarterback thinks. He knows those guys put in a ton of work just like him. They’ve done everything possible to keep him upright. It hasn’t gone well at times. In fairness, injuries have played a part in the problems. Three of the original five starters going into the season are out with health issues. Larry Borom had to move from right tackle to left guard to help plug the holes. That is how bad it’s been.

Yet the group has persevered, helping to pave the way for an effective ground attack and giving Fields decent enough pockets to at least be functional as a passer. For their efforts, the young quarterback decided to do something nice for his line during the Christmas holiday. Alex Shapiro of NBC Sports Chicago got the scoop via left tackle Braxton Jones.

While details are sketchy, the typical price for nice cooking grills ranges from $500-1000. That means Fields could’ve spent anywhere from $5,500 to $11,000. That is a healthy chunk of change on Christmas gifts. Kudos to Justin for making the investment and also understanding his audience. Linemen love their food.

It’s easy to see why teammates love Justin Fields.

He is always looking out for his guys. It is never about him. Everything is about everybody else. That is how leaders operate. When things are going well, they get the credit. When things go wrong, he shoulders the blame. It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. When the quarterback is willing to take the hits in the media, it earns the respect of everybody in that locker room. Relationships are deepened even further when he is willing to invest his own money into those same teammates. Personal bonds often breed harder play for each other on the field.

Justin Fields is showing himself to be the total package. Not only is he a remarkable talent at quarterback, but he’s also willing to do the small things. People often underestimate how far gestures like this go towards winning teammates over. If giving those guys an expensive grill is necessary to get that extra 5% of effort on Sundays; it’s money well spent.

Braxton Jones surprised a lot of people this year after being a fifth-round draft pick. He not only has had a good grade for his performance this year but he has a high upside with a great attitude. He will probably be the Bears starting left tackle for the next several years.

I am so glad the Jets drafted Wilson. I have little doubt Pace would have traded up for him.
