Sunday’s game at Soldier Field couldn’t have been easy for Jaquan Brisker. The Chicago Bears‘ excellent rookie safety was forced to sit out the rematch against the Green Bay Packers with a concussion. Being the competitor he is, there was no question he wanted to be out there. Instead, he played the role of cheerleader. Brisker was treated to an unexpectedly solid performance by an undermanned Bears defense. They held Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ offense to just 10 points through the first three quarters.
Sadly the wheels finally came off in the 4th. Green Bay scored 18 unanswered points in the final 15 minutes to complete their comeback. It was painful and all too familiar. The Bears have endured moments like this for many years at the hands of their rivals. They have now lost seven straight games to Green Bay, with the defense allowing at least 27 points in five of the last six. Brisker didn’t like the sour taste in his mouth. That might explain why he posted this tweet moments after the game ended.
Jaquan Brisker has embraced the rivalry.
This is a great thing. Too many people that come and go in this organization never understand the gravity of what it means to beat the Packers. He brings some familiarity to this situation too. He played for three years at Penn State in college. The Nittany Lions failed to beat rival Ohio State during those three years. The feeling of helplessness probably lingered with the safety coming to the NFL. He’s not about to let the same thing happen with the Packers. Chicago might not have the horse to compete this year, but this team should be significantly better by next season.
Some of the confidence in his statement likely stems from his belief in Justin Fields. The young quarterback had one of his best games as a pro on Sunday, throwing for 254 yards and running for another 71. It’s clear the Bears have themselves a legitimate franchise-caliber player at the position. If they can surround him with better talent moving forward, this team should win many more games. Jaquan Brisker is ready to contribute as well. His ascent as a possible future Pro Bowl safety has already begun. This team’s future looks bright.
