Is Lovie Smith A Logical Choice For Bears Vacant Defensive Coordinator?

-

The last few days at Halas Hall have been difficult. The loss to Green Bay started a series of unfortunate events that have not set well with fans. Then, Defensive Coordinator Alan Williams did not travel to Tampa with the team. When Matt Eberflus addressed the media on Wednesday, he had no further comment other than that Williams was still absent.

At that point, several wild rumors (which this article will not mention) started flying on social media. Not long after the Eberflus media session ended, news broke that Alan Williams had tendered his resignation, effective immediately.

While social media continues speculating, the Bears organization must concentrate on next week’s opponent. Facing Patrick Mahomes and the defending Champion Kansas City Chiefs is daunting, even under normal circumstances. The Bears must travel to K. C. and play a game when 40% of the offensive line and their starting DB are on the injured reserve list. They are also without a defensive coordinator for the second consecutive week and will be for the foreseeable future.

As this is being typed, we learned Bears GM Ryan Poles will address the media at some point today. Watch for details of that press conference right here after the press briefing has concluded.

Until plans are announced, we do not know if they will add a new coordinator during the season, but if they do, one candidate shines.

Is The Time Right To Bring Lovie Smith Back?

Lovie Smith is, of course, the former head coach for Chicago. His tenure ran from 2004 through 2012. In 2006, he led the team to their only trip to the Super Bowl since 1985. The Bears also made it to the NFC title game in 2010. Smith is the last head coach to win a playoff game in Chicago.

His defenses were legendary. The Bears are in desperate need of an aggressive defense. Despite a change in defensive coordinators, one thing that plagues the defense is their inability to get off the field. Third and long isn’t a problem for opposing teams to convert when the defense sits back in a soft zone. Lovie Smith should be able to solve that ongoing dilemma.

It also must be reported that the Bears have not won a post-season game since Lovie Smith departed.

Why This Will Not Happen

Plain and simple, the reason is job security. Matt Eberflus and Luke Getsy are under fire due to the Bears’ rough start. Poles does not have anyone on the staff to be elevated to an interim head coach position. Lovie Smith would be an immediate threat to Eberflus.
