Insider Reveals Chicago Bears Don’t Have QB as a Draft Priority

-

The Chicago Bears have a huge offseason ahead of them, and whether they like it or not most of the questions will center around what they do at quarterback. GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy already said from the start of the offseason that the plan is to keep Mitch Trubisky as the starter in 2020. What’s impossible to know for sure is whether they’re serious. Lying in order to protect their offseason objections wouldn’t be a new thing for this team.

However, this stance just gained a little more credibility. Matt Miller of Bleacher Report is one of the more notable and respected NFL draft analysts in the business. He’s also proven to have some solid sources when discussing teams and their objectives for April in regards to players they might target. His most recent scouting notebook shed some light on where the Bears have their eyes.

Is quarterback among them? Not so much.

“The Bears don’t own a first-rounder after trading for linebacker Khalil Mack in 2018 but do have two selections in the second round: picks No. 43 and 50 overall. Tight end, offensive line and cornerback were listed as the team’s biggest needs from a scouting source with the club. Quarterback was not mentioned as a priority.”

Chicago Bears lack of interest in draft QB is not surprising

There might be a near riot upon hearing this given how uncertain the team is at the position. Upon closer inspection though, it’s not a surprise. The Bears are not a rebuilding team. They are playing to win right now. Drafting a quarterback won’t do any good to that mission in 2020. It will be just another body eating up a roster spot. Especially since the team doesn’t even have a 1st round pick to spend on one.

To say nothing of the upcoming class being viewed as relatively weak by many top experts, particularly in terms of depth.

The safer course of action is to use those resources to bolster the rest of the offense. In this case, the tight end and offensive line spots. This doesn’t mean the Bears won’t add quarterbacks at all. It more likely means their focus on the position will be through free agency. No doubt they’ll target a veteran of some kind to serve as a backup who can also push Trubisky from behind. It’s not flashy, but it’s smart from a business and football perspective.

Drafting a QB doesn’t help the Bears now. That is what they’re focused on.
