Matt Nagy and the Chicago Bears have remained adamant since the end of last season. Their goal was to create competition at quarterback. That meant Mitch Trubisky would have another chance to keep his job, but he’d have to earn it. His challenger? Former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles. Somebody who has deep connections to Nagy and others on the coaching staff.

That is certainly something that will get the attention of the 25-year old. Since then Trubisky has put in lots of work this offseason. It’s clear his focus is entirely on winning the job and then winning games. Exactly what the Bears were hoping to see. Yet one man thinks their approach isn’t ideal.

Michael Robinson, former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion explained on NFL Network why he thinks the team should just name Trubisky the starter right now. Avoid any confusion going into training camp and the preseason.

“They should just go ahead and name him the starter even though we know that may be short-lived. Just to kind of ease his anxiety a little bit. Then you do yourself a favor. You moved up in the draft to get the kid, right? So give him every opportunity to win the job…

…If you want to be looked (at) right from a PR standpoint, Chicago Bears? Name him the quarterback. Give him every opportunity to win the job. But I think Nick Foles will be the starter by the end of the season”

The last thing the Bears want is putting Mitch Trubisky at ease

Ease his anxiety? That would solve nothing. The Bears spent the past three seasons doing everything in their power to make Trubisky comfortable. They brought in Nagy as head coach with his great motivational skills. A former QB himself. They kept his original QBs coach Dave Ragone. Chase Daniel was kept as backup purely in an attempt to help him learn the offense. It was a great honeymoon period.

That is now over. Trubisky wasted his chance to stay in it.

The Bears have reached the obvious conclusion. If the carrot didn’t work, then it’s time to try the stick. Foles is that stick. They want to see how he responds to pressure. That fear of knowing he could lose his job and his career as an NFL starter if he keeps messing up. Robinson is suggesting they just let the wounded animal die just so they can save some face.

That makes no sense. They still believe in Mitch and think this approach can help him. It’s worked with other QBs before. The risk is worth it.
