Kevin Greene has quite the reputation in the NFL. To most casual fans they know him as a former linebacker who delivered some of the most entertaining sound bytes in pro football history. He comes across as an intense, semi-insane person. He’s also a Hall of Famer who ranks third all-time with 160 quarterback sacks. Suffice to say he knows a thing or two about the game.
What many people forget is he’s also got credentials as a top quality assistant coach. Greene took over as the outside linebackers coach for the Green Bay Packers in 2009 when they transitioned to a 3-4 defense. Under his watch, Clay Matthews became one of the best pass rushing linebackers in the game. It was him and the defense that led the way to the teams’ Super Bowl victory in 2010.
Matthews has looked like he misses Greene too. He topped at least 10 sacks three times in five seasons when they were together. Since Greene stepped down in 2014, he’s done it only once in three seasons. His sack production has gotten steadily worse too (11 sacks to 6.5 to 5). Greene stated he wished to spend more time with his family when he left. However, he made it clear he’d love to return once his children both had entered college.
That has since come to pass and Greene has tried getting back into the coaching arena. Something he announced on Twitter a few weeks ago.

Already he attempted to get a position with his former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. This after current outside linebackers coach Joey Porter got in trouble with police. It didn’t come to pass, and so Greene continues to wait. At the same time, the Bears are searching for an outside linebackers coach. Somebody with knowledge about developing a young, athletic kid into a potential star.
It’s literally the easiest script in the world to write. The fact that he coached for the Packers would be the cherry on the sundae. It’s a matter of whether the Bears have the wherewithal to simply pick up the phone and make an offer.
