Former Eagles QB Pokes Holes In A Big Chicago Bears Rumor

-

The Carson Wentz rumor mill started off strong but boy has it slammed on the brakes this week. What in the world happened? People were convinced he’d be traded not too long after the Super Bowl. Yet Friday is just around the corner and nothing has happened. Most insiders agree on the following details. The Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts are the two primary teams in the running. Their offers though haven’t been to the liking of the Philadelphia Eagles.

So their GM Howie Roseman has slowed talks down and is waiting things out. No doubt he’s hoping one of those teams starts getting desperate and eventually ups their offer. What nobody knows is what the offers are. One man who has a pretty good idea? Former Eagles quarterback and ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski. He has it on good authority that the Colts have offered at least two 2nd round picks for Wentz with a possible future 3rd or 4th down the line. To his knowledge, that is the largest offer on the table.

Bigger than anything the Bears have put forward.

This would fly in the face of a well-established rumor that persisted for the past week. That the Bears had the biggest package on the table for Wentz. Some even saying they were putting a 1st round pick on the table. Others though had trouble believing that. It’s believed if that were true, the deal would already have been done. It is far more likely Roseman wants a 1st rounder but neither the Colts nor Bears are willing to offer one.

Mike Florio even stated the entire Bears-Wentz idea never made sense. Yes there are some connections between the two, but the red flags are too numerous. Coming off the worst season of his career. A history of being injury-prone. A bloated contract. Last but not least? A reputation for being at odds with his head coach. Why would Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace stake their jobs on such a player?

Chicago Bears want a QB but can’t afford to be reckless

Wentz was a good football player back in 2019. He was a great one in 2017. Yet it’s impossible to ignore 2020. Something clearly broke that season. His decision-making was awful, he threw inaccurate passes, and he stubbornly refused to adjust his game to manage a difficult situation around him. This is what led him to be benched for Jalen Hurts.

Is there are chance Wentz can rebound in a new situation? Of course. He’s only 28 and still talented. The problem Chicago feels like a bad option for him. This city is no less demanding of that position. One could argue it’s even worse because of how poor it’s performed for so many years. Wentz would be under the microscope from the moment he arrived.

Given how he handled the pressure cooker in Philadelphia?

It’s hard to imagine he would turn things around in any meaningful way with the Bears. Nevermind the rumors that he has no desire to come to Chicago anyway. He wants to go to Indianapolis. Nothing about this trade idea fits the Chicago Bears and how they approach matters. It may still happen, but Jaworski is well-connected. So what he’s saying can’t be ignored.
