Colston Loveland knows what good coaching looks like. His high school coach, Cameron Andersen, built a sustained winner for Gooding High School, reaching back-to-back conference championships while the tight end was there. Loveland was recruited by Jim Harbaugh at Michigan and won a national championship there. So his standards were pretty high when he joined the Chicago Bears as their 1st round pick of the 2025 draft. Would Ben Johnson make a positive impression?
The short answer is yes.
Loveland sat down to speak with Kay Adams about his impressions of the Bears and their new head coach. He didn’t need much prodding to offer immediate praise for Johnson’s contributions. The man is a bundle of energy, bringing constant intensity to meetings and practices. Yet what stands out the most is his attention to detail. The man is on top of everything. If you’re looking for a remarkable contrast to Matt Eberflus, that comment stands out the most.

That is more because the rookie hasn’t suited up for practices yet. He’s still working his way back from shoulder surgery. He won’t be ready until training camp. However, Johnson managed to give him a preview of things to come at OTAs. Word is fellow tight end Cole Kmet got the business end of Johnson’s wrath when he failed to properly line up for a play. It was a moment that caught many by surprise. Nothing like it had happened during Eberflus’ time with the team. It was a signal that things would be different. Colston Loveland now understands he had better be prepared because this head coach won’t suffer sloppiness. Rookies don’t get a free pass because they’re inexperienced. They’re professionals now.
