The Chicago Bears defensive line took a hit earlier this offseason when Eddie Goldman decided to opt out of 2020. So it was a question of whether the team truly was comfortable with their overall depth going into this season. Especially given the array of strong running games they’re certain to see. All of training camp they did make a move, leaving some to feel they were satisfied.

In the end though, GM Ryan Pace and the coaching staff decided to air on the side of caution. After making final cuts on Saturday, the team reached an agreement with veteran defensive lineman Mario Edwards. A former 2nd round pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2015, he spent last season with the New Orleans Saints where he collected three sacks in 14 games.

Edwards is a solid backup option. He has a good motor in the pass rush department and his size enables him to hold his own against the run as well. The Saints had the #4 run defense in the NFL last season.

Chicago Bears are getting a versatile player in Edwards

This is a great challenge for Bears defensive line coach Jay Rodgers. He’s among the most respected in the NFL at his job and has routinely gotten the most out of his players. Edwards has always had great talent. Many felt it was his overall lack of polish that stopped him from going into the 1st round five years ago. At just 26-years old, there’s still time for him to realize that potential.

His primary role will most likely be as a rotational interior defensive lineman with a focus on rushing the passer. That is where his primary value is. Odds are they’ll see him as a periodic substitute for Bilal Nichols and Akiem Hicks on passing downs. A way to give them a few extra snaps of rest during games. Not a bad plan.

Teams can never have enough guys who make the quarterback uncomfortable. If he helps in the run game too? That’ll be a bonus.
