Chicago Bears Make Another Tweak To Their Coaching Staff

-

It seems the roster isn’t the only thing continuing to undergo tweaks this off-season. Matt Eberflus is still making changes to the Chicago Bears coaching staff. It started with the arrival of Jon Hoke to take over as cornerbacks coach. Then Luke Steckel arrived from Tennessee to help as the new assistant offensive line coach. It appears Eberflus has no set requirement, willing to go with tons of experience and youth in equal measure. Now he seems ready to add a legacy name on top of it.

Kenny Norton III is the son of legendary Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ken Norton Jr., who helped win three Super Bowls in the mid-1990s. Since then, he’s had a lengthy coaching career between both college and the NFL. During his second stint with the Seattle Seahawks from 2018 through 2021, his son Norton III made it onto the staff through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. He then followed his father to UCLA in 2022 as a football analyst. Now it appears the kid has decided to leave the nest, taking a defensive position with the Bears.

Chicago Bears are getting sports bloodlines if nothing else.

Not only is Norton III’s father an accomplished Super Bowl champion as a player and coach, but his grandfather is legendary former heavyweight boxing champion Ken Norton Sr. Success seems to find this family in the world of professional athletics. It’s a welcoming sign that the third-generation Norton isn’t leaning too heavily on his father’s influence to find work in the industry. He wants to branch out and spread his wings. One thing is clear. He’s had some excellent teachers.

Aside from his father, Norton III got to learn from future Hall of Fame coach Pete Carroll in Seattle and college coaching legend Chip Kelly at UCLA. He understands how successful programs are run in different ways. Carroll is more old school, while Kelly strives to be state-of-the-art. The Chicago Bears are giving him a chance to further that education in hopes he can help them win more games. It isn’t yet clear what his role will be, but it’s hard to imagine he won’t be of use.
