Chicago Bears Continue Making 2023 Draft Intentions Clear

-

Like every other team, the Chicago Bears are gathering data on the 2023 NFL draft. However, unlike every other team, they have certain position groups they’re likely watching more than others. The Bears have roster needs that must be addressed if they’re going to become a contender in the near future. They hope the incoming college class can meet those needs. Based on a new update from draft expert Jordan Reid, it’s not hard to know where they’re focusing.

Representatives were spotted at the big showdown between Clemson and N.C. State. While both teams had talent at several positions, the defensive front sevens clearly defined this game—lots of linebackers, defensive tackles, and edge rushers to look over. Clemson alone had multiple players expected to be in the 1st round conversation. Edge rusher Myles Murphy had eight sacks and 14.5 tackles for a loss last season. Defensive tackle Tyler Davis flashes lots of potential as an interior pass rusher. Trenton Simpson is a speedy linebacker with instincts and blitzing prowess.

Unfortunately, top prospect Bryan Bresee missed the game with a minor medical issue.

The Chicago Bears are going to focus on the front seven.

That much is evident from how the 2022 season has unfolded thus far. The run defense is easily their weakest link. Defensive tackle is a big reason for this. Justin Jones and Angelo Blackson have looked fine in pass rush situations but fail to consistently secure gaps against the run. Linebacker also needs shoring up. Roquan Smith continues to be tremendous and Nicholas Morrow has been a pleasant surprise. Beyond them, it’s very much meh.

Don’t ignore the defensive end, either. Robert Quinn is 32 years old. Trevis Gipson and Dominique Robinson have potential but aren’t stars. Great 4-3 defenses are defined by their defensive fronts. Matt Eberflus is a former linebacker himself. It would be stunning if the Chicago Bears didn’t use one of their first three picks on a defensive lineman or linebacker in the upcoming draft. If not both.

Keep an eye out for more updates, and don’t be surprised if scouts are caught monitoring other players at those positions.
