Bears Players Have Discussed the Colin Kaepernick Situation

-

Make no mistake. The fans and media surrounding the Chicago Bears aren’t the only ones talking about Colin Kaepernick. It’s virtually certain that somebody inside Halas Hall brought up the veteran quarterback at least once in the past week. He will be holding a public workout in Atlanta on Saturday and all 32 teams are invited. Thus far 11 teams are known to be sending a representative. The Bears are not among them. This has upset many people. They don’t believe GM Ryan Pace is being responsible in regards to helping his team win.

One could argue it makes no sense for him to put the offense in the hands of a quarterback who hasn’t played or even practiced since 2016. Signing him would be all about exploring what he could do in 2020, and even that seems unnecessary. Why? The veteran market is expected to be richer in options than normal with several credible names being available. Names who have logged far more snaps than Kaepernick has.

It isn’t just the front office and coaches though. Kaepernick has a reputation among NFL players too. Many of whom are big fans of him and his mission to create positive change. Eddie Jackson spoke on 670 The Score with Mully & Haugh that he and other players in the locker room have indeed openly discussed the Kaepernick subject at length.

Bears don’t see Colin Kaepernick as their savior

Jackson didn’t mince words. While he’s happy Kaepernick is getting another shot, he made it clear the team is 100% behind Mitch Trubisky. Some may view this as foolish, but it’s a sign of the continued solidarity the team has managed to maintain behind the scenes in spite of recent struggles. They trust Trubisky can find his way out of the prolonged slump he’s been in. All it needs is enough time and the unwavering support of his teammates. Kaepernick is a fun topic of discussion, but he was never a realistic hope for this team.

If a change at quarterback does come, it won’t be until 2020 and will likely involve a more established veteran or a high draft choice. Kaepernick is still not a guarantee to be signed anyway. Teams don’t seem to be taking this workout seriously and if they were truly interested in the quarterback, they could’ve had him in for a visit and a private workout anytime they wished. It all feels like a bad publicity stunt. Still, maybe somebody will finally sign him and end this persistent story once and for all.

Just don’t expect the Bears to be that team.
