The Bears Officially Push Mitch Trubisky Closer to Starting

-

By this point most Chicago Bears fans have made peace with the fact that Mike Glennon is the starter this season. That of course doesn’t mean the entire season. It means he gets the first quarter or so to show whether or not he actually deserves the job. The conversation has since shifted to a cloudier issue. Will rookie Mitch Trubisky backup him or be relegated to third string?

This is important because it would mean he’s the one who plays if Glennon either struggles or gets injured. If it ends up being Mark Sanchez, then this would indicate to many that the Bears are basically red shirting Trubisky for the year. In other words they have every intention of not playing him.

Well thankfully head coach John Fox ended the suspense on that.

There is no arguing that point. Trubisky was excellent throughout the preseason. Though he had a few questionable throws, he was perfect with three touchdowns to no interceptions and completed over 67% of his passes. It would’ve been over 70 if not for a litany of drops by his pass targets.

Suffice to say he looked a lot more polished than a lot of people, national or local expected. He played well from under center, ran an effective play action game and operated with poise from within the pocket. It’s why people urged to start him over Glennon. Why wait if he’s playing this well?

In the end the Bears chose to play it safe. Give the veteran his opportunity and use whatever extra time is left to keep developing the kid. He’ll get his chance soon enough.
