Active NFL Defenders Openly Admit Luke Getsy Held Justin Fields Back

-

The Chicago Bears have already begun the process of making some big decisions regarding their structure going into a pivotal 2024 off-season. GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus reached one conclusion rather quickly. Changes were needed on the coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, along with three other assistants, were released. Lack of progress in the passing game and the lack of development from younger players were cited as primary reasons for the decision. That leaves one other question to address. Should Justin Fields be shown the door as well?

Here is where it gets interesting. Bears fans are split on the subject. Some think it’s time to cut the cord. Others think Getsy was the problem. It’s been pretty consistent when the conversations shift to those who have actually played the game. They think Fields needs to stay. Count active defenders Zaire Franklin and E.J. Speed among them. The two hosts of The Trenches Show and current linebackers for the Indianapolis Colts railed against Getsy for his horrible offensive scheme.

The Bears need to keep it simple. Hire a competent coordinator and draft Marvin Harrison Jr.

The plan to replace Luke Getsy could say a lot.

Thus far, the Bears have met or will meet five different coordinator options. They all have two things in common. Each has previous playcalling experience, and each runs an offense that is similar to what the Bears run or would likely fit Fields’ skillset. Maybe they feel the same way Franklin and Speed do. If they find a quality coordinator and keep stacking the offense with playmakers, the quarterback can finally make that big leap forward. One thing is for sure. It would be an incredibly bold move.

Experts feel the 2024 quarterback class is significantly stronger than last year. Chicago holds the #1 pick. Caleb Williams of USC has been called a generational talent by more than a few people with serious credentials. One former GM even said he’d have taken Williams over Peyton Manning. Poles would need a ton of guts to pass on all of that to stick with Fields again. Then again, his trade down from #1 last year yielded great results. Perhaps he feels he can pull it off again. This time he won’t have to worry about Luke Getsy ruining his plans.
