The Chicago Bears are putting the fate of their quarterback position in the hands of Ryan Pace once again. Fans aren’t happy about it. Honestly? It’s hard to blame them. This is the guy who handed Mike Glennon $45 million and traded for Nick Foles while surrendering another $21 million. Oh, and he also did that whole Mitch Trubisky thing back in 2017. The thing everybody still talks about.

No changes have happened to the Bears front office since that epic debacle four years ago. So why should anybody believe Pace will be able to get it right this time? This is why some are offering advice on things he could do to prevent another such disaster. Longtime Bears columnist Dan Pompei of the Athletic offered an excellent option.

“Hire a consultant who is a former general manager with a track record of success with quarterbacks. The gold standard would be former Packers general manager Ron Wolf, whose quarterback record is unmatched. Don’t let money be the reason he says no.”

This is something Pace has really done enough of in general.

Find ways to improve his front office by adding quality voices to it. Matt Nagy, for all the heat he gets, has tried to do that for his coaching staff. He brought in John DeFilippo last year to improve the QB room. Trubisky ended up having his second-most efficient year as a pro. The offensive improvements were modest but there. Why can’t Pace do the same?

If he’s willing to consider such an idea, here are a few names he must look into.

Names the Chicago Bears can call for help?

Ron Wolf

He may be on the older side but as Pompei said, the old former GM is still kicking around the league, willing to offer advice to anybody who wants it. There is no denying the man’s eye for quarterback talent. His first hit came back in 1978 when he drafted Doug Williams out of Grambling State. He led Tampa Bay to their first playoff win the next year. Then a few years later he became the first black QB to win the Super Bowl with Washington.

When Wolf took over the Packers in 1991, his first big move was to trade for Brett Favre from Atlanta. Pretty good move in the eyes of everybody except Chicago Bears fans. It didn’t stop there. Even as Favre built his legendary career, Wolf also drafted other names like Mark Brunell and Matt Hasselbeck. Two guys who would eventually be traded and end up becoming Pro Bowlers themselves.

Ernie Accorsi

A lot of Bears fans will groan when hearing this name. He’s the consultant the team hired back in 2015 that helped them eventually settle on Ryan Pace as GM and John Fox as head coach. Not exactly a combination that led to big things. Then building a roster was always Accorsi’s strong suit anyway. Especially when it came to the quarterback position. His track record nearly rivals Wolf’s.

In 1983, he stood his ground by drafting John Elway #1 overall believing him to be the best prospect he’d ever seen. Elway though had no desire to play for the Colts whom Accorsi worked for. So he was eventually traded and built a Hall of Fame career in Denver. A few years later, Accorsi pulled off a clever trade in the 1985 Supplemental draft to grab Bernie Kosar. He would lead the Cleveland Browns to three AFC championship games.

Last but not least? The man pulled off a trade for Ole Miss star Eli Manning in 2004. A move that would eventually bring the New York Giants two Super Bowl titles. Picking his brain can’t possibly hurt.

Rick Smith

It’s incredible this man is still without a job. The former Houston Texans GM built a team that ended up making the playoffs five times during his tenure. His last 1st round pick before being unfairly squeezed out of town? That would be Deshaun Watson. The three-time Pro Bowler everybody is fawning over right now was the original selection by Smith.

One must also not discount his move a few years prior to trade for Atlanta Falcons backup Matt Schaub. People thought it was crazy. Instead, Schaub led the team to two playoff appearances and made the Pro Bowl twice. So he knows how to work both the college and pro pipelines to find potential QB solutions.

Mike Shanahan

This is not a name one would think to ask but don’t be fooled. Shanahan has been tied to a lot of noteworthy QB acquisitions in his distinguished coaching career. It started as early as his time with the San Francisco 49ers as an offensive coordinator. They drafted Elvis Grbac in 1993. He’d eventually go to a Pro Bowl. Then as head coach of the Denver Broncos? He added Brian Griese, Jake Plummer, and Jay Cutler. All of whom became Pro Bowlers as well.

His best work may have come in 2012 though with the Washington Redskins. In that draft, they traded up to grab Robert Griffin III #2 overall. He’d eventually win Rookie of the Year and make the Pro Bowl. Then a few rounds later they snagged an overlooked young man named Kirk Cousins. He’s gone on to make the playoffs twice and reach two Pro Bowls.

So the Chicago Bears aren’t short on people they can ask for help.
