New Play Caller Rankings Paint An Ugly Picture Of Luke Getsy

-

The Chicago Bears have a long history of great defense. That trend seems to be carrying on just fine this season, as the unit has once again risen to become one of the NFL’s best. Sadly, the Bears also have an agonizing history of atrocious offensive play. That, too, is a tradition they haven’t shaken this year. Plenty of reasons go into this. Most of it centers around their agonizing inability to find a capable quarterback. However, it also comes down to an equally bad ability to identify capable playcallers. Luke Getsy seems to be their latest example.

Matt Eberflus brought him over from Green Bay, hoping the young assistant could establish the popular wide-zone scheme in Chicago. It was a logical idea, but the problem was that Getsy had no experience calling plays. He was a literal shot in the dark for the Bears. Sadly, it appears they missed once again. After a difficult 2022, it was hoped an infusion of more talent would help this year. The result was going from 23rd in scoring to 22nd. Patton Analytics decided to compile data metrics on every player calling in the NFL, accounting for personnel and team constraints.

Let’s say it wasn’t the best look for Getsy.

Luke Getsy feels like an inevitable dismissal.

When you’re considered on the same level as Nathaniel Hackett, it’s a problem. The critical difference is Hackett has been dealing with quarterback problems all year. Getsy has had Justin Fields for most of the season. If you can’t get reasonable scoring out of one of the most dynamic athletes at the quarterback position today, it is hard to understand what good you are to the organization. Maybe Fields isn’t a franchise guy. Still, if you can only top 20 points in five out of ten starts with him, D.J. Moore, and Cole Kmet on the field? There is no easy way to defend you.

Everything points to changes coming. Either Luke Getsy will be scapegoated by Eberflus to protect his own job, or the entire staff will be dismissed. Regardless, it feels like this will be his last season on the Bears’ sideline. There is no way to justify keeping him around when the evidence isn’t there. Getsy has no feel for the call sheet. His situational work is subpar, and he’s arguably at his worst in the red zone. Whenever he runs into a competent defensive coach, he always seems to come out on the short end. You can’t have that if you want to win at the highest level in this league.
