The Chicago Bears are 3-7, fresh off a narrow 16-13 victory over the hapless Carolina Panthers. There hasn’t been much to feel good about lately with this team. Head coach Matt Eberflus hasn’t been able to get them playing with any efficiency. Penalties and turnovers remain high. Neither quarterback has found the productivity hopes for. While the defense is better over the past few weeks, it’s hard to know if that is simply thanks to a softer schedule. GM Ryan Poles has remained steadfast in his belief that things are progressing. Apparently, not everybody inside Halas Hall is happy with the situation.
A source told SM that some people higher up in the organization aren’t happy with Poles. His selection of Eberflus as head coach is a bad look by itself with his 6-21 record. It doesn’t stop there, though. They are also upset that the GM chose to pass on quarterback C.J. Stroud in the draft last April. The #2 overall pick continues to play great football in Houston, cracking 300 yards passing for the fourth time this season and leading another game-winning drive in the 4th quarter to beat Cincinnati.
The Bears could’ve drafted him with their #1 pick but traded it to Carolina instead. Hindsight or not, Poles was at the center of that decision, and some people aren’t happy about it.
Ryan Poles is in a tricky spot.
Several of his young additions are playing well. Darnell Wright looks like a keeper at right tackle. Jaquan Brisker, Kyler Gordon, Montez Sweat, Andrew Billings, and T.J. Edwards have all made the defense better. D.J. Moore is on track for well over 1,000 yards. It looks like the GM has done a good job stacking talent. However, two of his most important decisions haven’t gone well. The quarterback situation remains unresolved and his pick for head coach isn’t showing any signs of getting this team pointed in the right direction.

Justin Fields is expected back from his thumb injury next week in Detroit. The next four games will be against teams with winning records. Three of them will be on the road. How Ryan Poles’ team handled that stretch could go a long way in determining what his future might be. The Bears have never fired a GM after only two years. It may come down to his commitment to Eberflus and whether he can sell a solution at quarterback in the upcoming draft. It’s clear enough that as long as Stroud keeps playing well and the Bears QBs don’t, it won’t reflect well on Poles.
