After two encouraging performances against Denver and Washington, it was hoped Justin Fields may have finally turned the corner as a passer. If he could carry that momentum against an aggressive Minnesota Vikings defense, it would be confirmation. Sadly, it was not to be. Not only did Fields have a rough day on the scoreboard, scoring only six points and failing to top 60 yards passing in almost three quarters, but he also left the game with a hand injury that sent him to the locker room. He did not return.
It fittingly came on a play where he held the ball in the pocket, got flushed out, and then sacked from behind. He landed awkwardly on his throwing hand. It was the moment many Bears fans feared would happen sooner or later. A serious injury. While nothing is certain yet, the quick way he was declared out for the rest of the game is never a good sign. Initial thoughts from medical specialists on social media believe it might be a broken hand or wrist. If so, Fields is going to miss multiple games.
Justin Fields could not afford this setback.
Not only does it dwindle the number of opportunities he has left to save his job, but it also virtually guarantees the Bears’ season will crumble. Another bad finish, along with failing to play a full season once again, will be more than enough evidence for GM Ryan Poles to make a change at quarterback. Chicago remains in line to have one of the first two picks next year, giving them a clear shot at either Caleb Williams or Drake Maye. Fields has battled through a lot of problems around him. The blocking is still inconsistent, and the coaching isn’t any better. Still, the fact remains he hasn’t done enough with the opportunities he’s had.
Tyson Bagent will have an opportunity to make his case over the next few weeks presuming Justin Fields misses extended time. In the unlikely event he does something with it, the Bears may go into 2024 with a QB they like. Otherwise, expect Poles to be scouting every top quarterback like crazy from January to April. It’s an unfortunate way for Fields’ tenure to go out, but that is the sad truth of the NFL. Sink or swim. Another team will likely give him a chance. Chicago will move forward with somebody else.
