Justin Fields threw for over 600 yards and eight touchdowns in a span of five days for the Chicago Bears. Not many quarterbacks in NFL history can boast that. It’s even stranger knowing it’s a Bears quarterback doing this. People were ready to abandon the sinking ship last month. Fields looked as uneven and uncertain as ever in the first three games. He didn’t throw to open receivers, took unnecessary sacks, and committed some brutal turnovers in crunch time. Now, he looks like one of the best quarterbacks in football, leading the league in touchdown passes.
Plenty of people can’t wait to see if he can carry this momentum forward. He’ll have a big opportunity. Minnesota, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles are up next. All three teams have mediocre-to-bad pass defenses. Fields could have a golden opportunity in front of him. One person isn’t buying it, though. Former Super Bowl champion defensive tackle Chris Canty played with some good quarterbacks in his times. Guys like Tony Romo and Eli Manning. He thinks Fields’ recent outburst is a mirage.
If the Bears are smart, they’ll use it to their advantage by making the quarterback available for trade. His value will never be higher than it is right now.
Trading Justin Fields is a fun thought experiment.
Canty isn’t entirely insane for suggesting this. The Bears played two of the NFL’s worst defenses in Denver and Washington in their past two games. It is quite possible Fields merely took advantage of a softer schedule. Mitch Trubisky did the same thing during his time in Chicago. Still, the tape shows a player that might finally be turning the corner. Other teams saw the same thing on primetime television. Fields’ trade value was probably a 3rd round pick at best when the season began. After what he just accomplished, it is no longer crazy to think the Bears could wrangle a 1st round pick for him.

If GM Ryan Poles isn’t sold on him, then Canty is correct. The smart move might be to trade Justin Fields while his stock is inflated. Will that happen? Almost certainly not. Poles, head coach Matt Eberflus, and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy all expressed the need for patience. They felt Fields was getting closer to turning the corner. Staying the course was vital. To their credit, they did so. Now they’re being rewarded. They want to see if this version of Fields is here to stay.
