Anybody that has followed D.J. Moore throughout his successful NFL career will know one thing. He doesn’t crave the spotlight. He is an introverted personality, never known for being a quote machine. His only interest is handling his business on Sundays. However, that hasn’t stopped fate from having some fun at his expense. One of the great ironies of Moore’s life is drawing direct comparisons to a former wide receiver great in Steve Smith Sr. That wasn’t a surprise since Moore was drafted to Carolina in 2018. The irony stems from the fact that Smith is likely the greatest trash-talker in league history.
His quips are legendary. Yet his greatest moment ironically came after he retired. Smith attended a Panthers practice during the regular season on Amazon’s hit show “All Or Nothing.” At one point, he approached quarterback Cam Newton with a quandary. He needed to know what to do with his fantasy lineup at wide receiver. He wasn’t benching DeAndre Hopkins, so he wondered if it was wise to consider starting Moore or speedster John Brown.
Remember he did all of this with Moore standing right next to him.
D.J. Moore seemed to get the message.
One thing you learn about Smith is that while it may sound like he’s joking, he is often 100% serious. It isn’t clear when exactly this exchange took place. What is known is that Moore struggled early in his rookie season. He had only 13 catches for 191 yards and one touchdown in his first six games. Then he seemed to flip a switch, notching 29 catches for 418 yards and a touchdown over the next six. It’s safe to wonder if Smith’s pep talk/threat had the desired effect of getting him motivated to play better.

Now that D.J. Moore is in Chicago, it’s important Bears fans see this clip if they haven’t already. It is one of the absolute greatest mic ‘d up moments in NFL history and didn’t even happen during a game. Moore deserves credit for not losing his cool. Some other players might’ve gotten upset by what Smith was saying. That is likely why he said them to begin with. Bears fans know about his antics well from the times he tormented them in the past. This is a moment they can enjoy.

having said that.. it was a little funny. (you know when he was talking to Cam’ he KNEW DJ was behind him. he was teasing him…. so it was ‘golden’ but it was also calculated.
DJ is gonna help put this offense in the top 1/3!
If that was one of the greatest mic’d up moments in NFL history, either, NFL history has an extremely weak collection of mic’d up moments to choose from, or, the writer has a very low standard for greatness. Whatever the case, this mic’d up moment wasn’t great at all.
Steve Smith is different, I don’t think he was joking about slapping the shit outta him.
He said “if u give me 2 points umma slap the shit outta you” 😂😂😂. That’s golden.
