Aaron Rodgers swore he’d never be anything like Brett Favre when he finally became the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. In a crazy twist of fate, their careers have become shockingly similar. Favre won only a single Super Bowl, came up short in the playoffs every year after that and became more focused on personal achievements as he got older. Then he started flirting with retirement. It was an annual saga fans quickly grew tired of. Sure enough, the same is happening with Rodgers. People once again wonder if the future Hall of Famer with return for another year or retire. Adam Schefter thinks a third option is in play.
He stated on ESPN that there is a very real possibility Rodgers will be traded this off-season, provided Green Bay can find a taker for his massive contract. After an 8-9 finish, the Packers have several roster questions. Rodgers is 39 years old. The team is running out of time to determine whether former 1st round pick Jordan Love can be their quarterback of the future or not. With the team going backward, it might be time to finally say goodbye. Of course, much of this depends on if Rodgers intends to keep playing.
Aaron Rodgers’ options might be somewhat limited.
His cap hit in 2023 will be a substantial $31 million. Only six teams currently have enough projected cap space to take on that deal. That doesn’t include the Chicago Bears. Cincinnati has Joe Burrow, so they’re out. That leaves the Falcons, Giants, Texans, Patriots, and Seahawks as possible contenders. New York has a big decision to make on Daniel Jones, who is a free agent. The same goes for Seattle and Geno Smith. Houston has the #2 overall pick. It’s more like they’ll draft a quarterback.
When looking at the landscape, Atlanta and New England might be his two best shots. Other teams like the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans are worth watching if they can clear up the space. Either way, the outlook is clear. While there is still a possibility Aaron Rodgers stays in Green Bay, the odds are better than ever that he’s played his last down in green and gold. It is somewhat fitting since his last-ever pass for them might be that ugly interception against Detroit to kill their playoff hopes.
