The Chicago Bears knew coming into the offseason that the defense was undergoing a transition. One of the biggest issues they’d need to figure out is the cornerback position. Outside of Jaylon Johnson, they don’t really have anybody that can be called a proven starter. GM Ryan Poles bided his time to see if the market might unfold to his advantage. That decision proved fruitful as the team came to terms with veteran Tavon Young according to Ari Meirov of Pro Football Focus.
Young was a surprise cut by the Baltimore Ravens this offseason. The 28-year old is considered one of the better nickel corners in the league. Somebody with a strong mix of coverage ability, ball skills, and tackling prowess. He played every game last season, notching 35 tackles, two sacks, and an interception. Given the importance of that specific job in Matt Eberflus’ new defense, this is a quality pickup for the Bears.
Especially since he won’t count against their comp formula.

While primarily a slot cornerback, Tavon Young has the versatility to play both inside and outside depending on the situation and team need. No doubt that was something that appeals to Eberflus and his staff. They like players that can be interchangeable. He certainly checks the boxes in terms of toughness and grit. He’ll be a great influence on the young Bears defensive backs. Coming from a winning organization also won’t hurt.
It isn’t a surprise the team targeted him. Not only does he fill a critical need for them, but assistant GM Ian Cunningham has deep ties to Baltimore. He knows the kinds of players they produce and wants Chicago to establish a similar identity. Young represents another step in that direction. It will be interesting to see how the Bears deploy him this year. If they can secure one more solid cornerback option, the secondary might be in good shape.
