A lot of people can’t comprehend what is happening in Seattle right now. Russell Wilson wants changes. He is tired of getting hit too much and tired of playing in an offensive system that won’t accentuate his talents. Yet rather than try to accommodate their superstar quarterback, the Seahawks team brass apparently brushed off his concerns. So the 32-year old went public. Now momentum is building that he could actually be traded. Experts everywhere are stunned. One person that isn’t? Brandon Marshall.

The former Pro Bowl receiver has a unique perspective of what is going on in Seattle. He played there during the final season of his career in 2018. He had a first-hand account of Wilson the quarterback and the type of people who run that team. The most important being Pete Carroll. He told a story on First Things First about the Seahawks head coach and how he handled Wilson during practice one time.

It paints a pretty clear picture of who is running that show.

That says it all, doesn’t it? Carroll treats his players with respect but at the end of the day, he’s going to do things his way. He isn’t going to let one person override his vision for that football team. Not even the quarterback. Remember this guy built his reputation in college. He moved on from big-name quarterbacks before and still ended up having success. Is it so crazy to think he could do the same here?

Not in his mind. This is not to say Carroll is eager to push Wilson out of town. However, if it comes down to making a decision between the player and the team, he’ll choose the team. He isn’t the type of person who will compromise his firmly-held beliefs just to make one guy happy.

This is why Brandon Marshall isn’t surprised

Seattle has floated the idea of trading Wilson in the past. That same year in 2018, there were rumblings of their interest in dealing him to Cleveland for the #1 overall pick. It seems they had significant interest in Baker Mayfield. Eventually, the two sides worked things out and the quarterback got his money. Odds are though Wilson never forgot that. Just one of several bits of evidence that the Seahawks didn’t view him as a true superstar QB. Not like a Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, or Patrick Mahomes.

What Brandon Marshall revealed can’t be ignored. Carroll is a coach set in his ways. Either conform to his vision for the team or feel free to go elsewhere. It happened with Earl Thomas and it might be happening with Wilson. The problem is a free safety is considerably easier to lose than a franchise quarterback. Is the head coach that steadfast in his beliefs?

It certainly seems that way given where this is going.

Recent buzz hints that the Chicago Bears are committed to making a run at Wilson. They are one of the teams on his short list of desired destinations. GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy are on the hot seat. They need to win in 2021. Landing Wilson would be an answer to their prayers and finally give Chicago a legitimate star quarterback.
