Cubs DFA Catcher After Trade With Rays

-

The Cubs traded for right-handed hitter José Martínez Sunday morning, adding a much-needed bat to the roster that can really hit lefties hard.

The Rays will receive a couple of players to be named later or some cash in exchange for Martínez. To make room on the active roster, the Cubs DFA’d backup catcher Josh Phegley.

Phegley, 32, signed a minor league deal with the Cubs in the offseason and he was actually looking pretty good in spring training before the shutdown. The veteran catcher still made it on the Opening Day roster, but Phegley just wasn’t providing much at the plate when he was used.

The catcher started two games as the DH, and in 11 games Phegley went 1-for-16, the lone hit coming on a two-run homer against the Cardinals.
