White Sox Outfielder Goes On IL For COVID-19 Related Reason

-

White Sox fans got a bit of a surprise on Monday, as news broke of outfield prospect Luis Gonzalez getting called up to the big league team in time for a four-game series against the Tigers. Everyone thought one of the infield bench guys would be let go to make room for Gonzalez on the active roster, but unfortunately it’s COVID-19 related.

The White Sox announced that Adam Engel has been placed on the injured list not because he has tested positive for the coronavirus, but the outfielder may have come into contact with someone who had it.

The good news is that the league feels secure about no other players being in danger, thus the series is still scheduled to proceed starting Monday night in Chicago against the Tigers.

Engel had a .977 OPS through his first 12 games of the season, but obviously because of the small sample size, his numbers quickly dipped after a rough series against the Tigers last week.

Engel did not play in any of the three games against the Cardinals this past weekend.
