The Cubs finalized their 30-man Opening Day roster Thursday morning, but there was another minor move as well that affects the team’s secondary roster at South Bend.
Outfielder Mark Zagunis has reportedly opted out of the 2020 season and has been put on the restricted list. This decision has opened up a spot on the Cubs 60-man player pool.
Zagunis was not on the Cubs’ 40-man roster.
In 2019, Zagunis made the Opening Day roster and was even in the starting lineup against the Rangers in the first game of the season. However, the outfielder didn’t get much playing time and by the end of May Zagunis was demoted back to Triple-A Iowa. He was briefly called back up in August, but ended the season with only 36 at-bats in the majors.
Zagunis became the 16th player to opt out of the 2020 season.
Zagunis, 27, has been in the Cubs organization since 2014, when he was drafted in the third round out of Virginia Tech.
